Finney not running for sheriff, former campaign manager says

Retired St. Paul police Chief William Finney won't be running for Ramsey County sheriff in 2010, former Finney campaign manager Sheldon Anderson said today.

Finney's not ruling out a future run for political office, but he has no definitive plans at this time, Anderson said.

Bob Fletcher, Ramsey County sheriff for four terms, says he will be running again. Fletcher beat Finney by 1,133 votes -- less than 1 percent of votes cast -- in a bitter faceoff in 2006.

Whoever runs against Fletcher is "going to have to raise a lot of money," Anderson said. "Bob's a savvy campaigner and it's going to take a lot of time, a lot of effort. I felt Bill needed to start campaigning or someone else needed to take a crack at Bob."

Will Assistant St. Paul police Chief Matt Bostrom be that person?

"The encouragement for me to enter the race has only increased," Bostrom told my colleague, Dave Orrick, today. "And I have not ruled it out."
