Man charged with assaulting officer with bike at RNC

A self-described anarchist who claimed he was beaten in the Ramsey County jail after being arrested at the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul has finally been charged for the alleged offenses that put him there.

A criminal complaint filed Thursday in Ramsey County District Court alleges that Elliot Hughes, 20, slammed into a bike cop with his bicycle and then lowered his shoulder into a second officer during the convention's raucous first day.

The officer struck by Hughes' bicycle suffered a cut to his knee, the complaint said. The second officer, who was knocked off her bicycle when Hughes allegedly leaned into her, suffered an abrasion and a bruise to her knee.

Hughes faces two counts of assaulting an officer and a separate count of obstructing the legal process with force -- all gross misdemeanor offenses.

The St. Paul man could not be reached to comment Thursday.
