Fletcher held a fundraiser Tuesday attended by 260 people. He said he's running for sheriff because "there's still work to be done." Fletcher listed Latin American drug cartels, Somali youth gangs and economic-related crimes as three main focuses. He also noted that improving and using technology to fight crime will remain a priority.
Fletcher, a former two-term City Council member and St. Paul cop for 18 years, is running against St. Paul Assistant Police Chief Matt Bostrom and Laura Goodman, director of public safety at St. Catherine's University, who has served as a Ramsey County sheriff's deputy and Minneapolis police officer and lieutenant. All three have filed campaign finance reports with the county's elections department, but official candidacy filings don't start until May 18.
Goodman, a former president of the International Association of Women Police, has outlined community policing, domestic and gang violence and accountability from law enforcement as her top priorities. Bostrom has said community policing, fiscal responsibility and collaboration among agencies are his top concerns.
Goodman and Bostrom are seeking DFL endorsement, while Fletcher won't be seeking political endorsement.
